Mitochondrial organizations to create Mitochondrial Care Network
Mitochondrial organisations comprising of the The Foundation for Mitochondrial Medicine (FMM), MitoAction, the Mitochondrial Medicine Society (MMS) and the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF) initiates to create a mitochondrial care network that aims to unify clinicians to define, design and execute practices in mitochondrial medicine best suited for mitochondrial afflicted individuals ensuring efficient medical care provided to them.
It is to be noted that any clinician who currently provides care to patients with mitochondrial disease can apply in order to join the team for a pilot phase of the network. The initiative encompasses opportunities, strengths, challenges, and rewards thus partaking in the dissemination and gaining knowledge to ascertain patients who are underserved thus offering quality medical services to them eventually stimulating knowledge base for future applications.
Amy Goldstein, M.D., President of the Mitochondrial Medicine Society stated “The Network will be an organized group of individual Mitochondrial Medicine Centers (MMCs) that will build on current consensus guidelines for diagnosis and care and significantly improve patient outcomes by sharing knowledge. We strongly encourage all interested parties to apply.”
Clinicians adopt trial and error methods in the absence of collective knowledge of treatment guidelines thus lowering the quality service provided. The Board seeks a diverse group of Centers for the pilot phase to determine the full scope, clinical priorities, and implementation of standards of care and long-term desired outcomes of the Network.
Kira Mann, CEO of MitoAction stated “We are enthusiastic that the Network will address the unmet needs of clinical care for many patients with mitochondrial disease and lead to an expanding knowledge base that will result in better care for the future.”
